Today we began a short unit on graphing. Each student wrote a survey question and decided upon possible answers. They then began asking each other to answer their survey. At least one student (thank you, Marissa!) asked other students on the playground during lunch. Other students planned to ask their neighborhood friends and family to answer their question. Mr. Hamilton and I also responded to several survey questions. After tallying the results, each student will use an online graphing program to create a bar graph and a circle graph. Maybe we can post those results on our blog. Stay tuned!

We have a new author in our blogroll. Ms. Heiselt, one of our AWESOME first grade teachers, will be joining our conversation. I am excited about the opportunity for my fifth graders to talk with their first grade buddies. I am also very proud of the work my students are producing as they post their work and write the Daily Blog. If you haven’t noticed there is a new page titled Earth Day. The kids worked on writing poems in honor of the Earth. Their writing appears on this page rather than on their individual blogs. We are still working on solving the problem of adding photos of student work.

Today students will begin posting past work. They are very excited about being able to showcase projects that they have completed throughout the year. We will begin with our Women’s History projects. Students were to read a biography about a woman in history. They took notes on important events in their life and then wrote a short summary of their life. In addition, they created a three dimensional portrait on paper plates. Students will post their summary as well as a photo of their paper plate portrait.

Beginnings

Welcome to Room 1! We are just beginning our venture into the world of blogging. Each student will be posting comments on various learning experiences that take place in the classroom beginning with technology use in and out of the classroom. The Daily Blog will be cooperatively written to give a daily account of life in fifth grade, seen through the eyes of fifth graders. Parents are encouraged to visit often and will be invited to participate in our conversation.
